The esteemed palates at WineAlign took some time to learn a bit more about traditional ciders in Ontario. We are so happy they took the time to try our ciders & this is what they thought:

David Lawrason "Kingston Black is a prized UK heritage cider apple. This was estate grown in Prince Edward County by one of Ontario's leading producers. It pours fairly deep gold. The nose is lifted with lovely ripe almost caramel, honey, pumpkin spice and heady florals. It is medium weight, fresh yet delicate with lively effervescence and acidity. Some tannic pith and hints of sour-edged acetic and brettamomyces on the palate, which will a negative for some and complexity for others. The length is excellent. 93 pts"

John Szabo "Kingston Black is a rare, premium heritage cider apple, one of the few that are balanced enough to bottle on its own as a varietal cider, grown at Loch Mór's estate orchard in Prince Edward County. This bottling is barrel fermented with wild yeast, a combination of two vintages, ageing in wood since the 2023 harvest until recent bottling. It sports a complex and attractive nose of burnished, ripe and binned apples, gentle caramel and honeycomb, beeswax and wet wool. The bone dry palate is characterized by relatively soft though still grippy tannins and balanced acids - nothing is out of balance here. Length is very good to excellent. A clearly premium, complex example, and attractively priced as such. 93 pts"

David Lawrason "This 'estate' single variety Harrison apple cider is the first made in Canada, from the orchard on Danforth Road in Prince Edward County. The Harrison apple is a North American Heritage apple developed in the 1800s in New Jersey. This is deeply coloured, almost bronze in colour. The nose is quite opulent, and almost sweet with caramel, baked apple notes. The palate is rich yet delicate, with low effervescence and moderate acidity. Big flavours, with some tannin drying the finish. Excellent length. 94 pts"

John Szabo, MS "Loch Mór is the is the first Canadian commercial orchard to grow the very rare Harrison apple on their Prince Edward County estate. It's one of the few true North American cider apples and was documented as early as 1808 for cider in New Jersey/NYC. The variety was thought lost post-Prohibition until recently rediscovered. It pours a golden-amber colour and displays its relatively high acidity, here tamed by low effervescence, more of a gently spritzy rather than fully sparkling cider. Tannins are likewise fairly soft and plush, and flavours veer into the candied/caramelized/orange marmalade spectrum, broad and complex. Very good length, too. A highly intriguing and unique single variety cider, well worth tracking down. 8.5% ABV. 93 pts"

Sara d'Amato "A single-varietal cider crafted from the rare Harrison apple grown in Prince Edward County. A North American cider apple, Harrison appeared in records as early as 1808 in New Jersey and New York. Thought lost after Prohibition, it resurfaced only recently, and Loch Mór stands as the first Canadian commercial orchard to grow it. The result is a deeply golden, generously aromatic cider: plush, low in tannin, and irresistibly welcoming. Expect bright orange zest, warm baked apple, and a whisper of butterscotch, carrying through on a notably long, satisfying finish. 92 pts"

John Szabo, MS "A single variety, estate-grown bottling of Harry Masters Jersey apples, this is a deeply coloured, and deeply-flavoured cider with very gentle effervescence and notable tannic grip on the palate. It features attractive, maturing yellow and orange-fleshed orchard fruit flavours, fully dry, and indeed the pleasant bitterness that accompanies the tannins adds an extra dimension of flavour, freshness and texture. Length is excellent. Top notch. 7.3% ABV. 93 pts"

David Lawrason "Loch Mor, on Danforth Road in Prince Edward County, took Canadian Cidery of the Year in 2024, with this dry cider from an antique British cider apple taking Gold in 2025. It pours fairly deep bronze gold. The nose is pronounced and penetrating with very ripe almost peachy fruit, caramel and floral notes and a tweak of acetic acid. It is medium-full bodied (7.3% abv) with crisp, sour edged acidity and fine pithy tannin. Slightly bitter, excellent length. 91 pts"
